Discovery and layers…
Artist Statement
After more than 25 years as a graphic designer, I began a new journey to uncover my voice as an artist. My work is rooted in exploration—painting what I feel and what draws my attention, allowing curiosity and instinct to guide the process. Often, a small detail—a corner, a shift, a fragment—becomes the starting point for deeper investigation.
Working primarily with acrylic paint, charcoal, ink, and other mixed media, I build surfaces through layering, removal, and rediscovery. Using scrapers, metal edges, and unconventional tools instead of brushes, I push and pull the material—adding, subtracting, and revealing what lies beneath. The process is physical and intuitive, driven by a constant dialogue between control and chance.
My background in graphic design, photography, and printing informs my sense of composition, structure, and color. Influences from modern and urban architecture appear through angles, planes, and spatial relationships, creating a balance between external structures and internal landscapes.
Living in Southern California—particularly in Palm Springs—has shaped my sensitivity to light, space, and clarity. The light of the desert and the region’s architectural history subtly inform the atmosphere of the work.
Ultimately, my paintings are about layering experience—emotion, memory, instinct, and observation—while embracing the unknown. They reflect a process of discovery, letting go, and allowing something unexpected to emerge.
